During the healing phase, nutritional rehabilitation is critical. Working with a dietitian familiar with celiac disease ensures you address the specific deficiencies that commonly accompany it — particularly iron, folate, B12, vitamin D, and magnesium.

In midlife adults, the presentation is often far subtler — fatigue, mood changes, skin issues, or joint pain dominate, while digestive symptoms remain mild or intermittent.

This non-classical presentation is increasingly recognised in medical literature and is referred to as silent or atypical celiac disease. It is especially common in adults who were not diagnosed in childhood.

Stress also plays an important compounding role. Chronic psychological stress alters gut permeability and immune regulation, which can worsen autoimmune activity and deepen the cycle of acid dysregulation. Managing stress through consistent sleep, regular movement, and mindfulness practices supports gut healing alongside dietary changes — but these are supportive measures, not substitutes for medical diagnosis and treatment.
