Magnesium oxide is best avoided as a primary supplementation strategy. Its low absorption rate means you are absorbing very little usable magnesium per tablet, regardless of how high the label dose appears. The exception is short-term use as a mild laxative under medical guidance.
Foods naturally rich in magnesium — dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, black beans, dark chocolate, and whole grains — remain the most bioavailable dietary source and should anchor your intake before supplementation fills the gap.
