Adults aged 35 to 45 face a compounding disadvantage. Many in this group were either diagnosed with ADHD late or are only now recognising it — meaning years of nutrient depletion may have gone unaddressed.

For B6, focus on foods like poultry, tuna, salmon, potatoes, bananas, and fortified cereals. These are accessible, everyday foods that can meaningfully shift your baseline if you are currently undereating them.

If dietary intake is not sufficient — which is common in busy adults who rely on convenience foods — a targeted supplement may be worth considering. Look for zinc glycinate or zinc picolinate, as these forms are better absorbed than zinc oxide. For B6, a B-complex supplement that includes pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P), the active form of B6, is generally more effective than standard pyridoxine.

Do not self-prescribe high doses. Excessive zinc supplementation can interfere with copper absorption, and very high B6 doses have been linked to nerve-related symptoms. Start low, stay consistent, and review with a healthcare provider.

The Gut Absorption Factor

One factor most people overlook is gut health. Zinc and B6 absorption both depend on a well-functioning digestive system, and adults with ADHD have a higher reported rate of gut motility issues, which can impair nutrient uptake at the source.

If you experience frequent bloating, irregular digestion, or have a history of antibiotic use, your gut may not be absorbing zinc or B6 efficiently even if your diet is good.
